History of Computers, Modern Times

The design of modern-day laptops that are in existence generally begun in the early 2000s. All laptops produced today to share a lot in common with the laptops of the new millennia's first decade. Therefore, modern-day laptop computers cannot be discussed without reference to computers for the last two decades.

The 2000s

The turn of the new millennia ushered in a lot of uncertainties and innovations in the tech industry. Many technologies were dramatically evolved during this period. This phenomenon also positively affected the evolution of laptops.

The rapid rise of windows in terms of security and robustness led to tremendous development in the early 2000s. Also, the first version of the macOS was released at that time. The sale of laptops reached a staggering 30 million units.

Manufacturers like Toshiba, Compaq, HP, and more made a lot of headway in terms of innovation and portability.

In 2005, for the first time in history, the sales of laptops surpassed that of desktops. In subsequent years, the inclusion of features on laptops such as WIFI, touchscreens, and HDMI port ensured the dominance of laptops in the computer industry. In 2007, the MacBook Air release by Apple brought about a different category of razor-thin laptops.

Present Day Laptops

Modern-day laptops come in different forms and perform different functions. In general, modern laptops can be categorized into a handful of types. These types are traditional laptops, netbooks, sub-netbooks, 2-in-1 laptops, rugged laptops, desktop replacement laptops, gaming laptops, and business laptops.

Traditional laptops come in the usual clamshell shape with the screen at the top and the keyboard and trackpad and the other side. These laptops are the most common and range between 10 to about 17 inches of screen size. These types of laptops come in with three common OSs, which are: Windows, macOS, Linux, and Chrome OS.

Netbooks are smaller light-weight, cheap, and energy-efficient laptops. These types of computers weigh about two pounds and are not suitable for high-speed processing tasks. The Sub-netbooks are even smaller laptops that weigh almost less than a pound. A typical example of a sub-netbook is the MacBook Air. Such types of computers are suitable for low-speed processes in-transit.

2-in-1 laptops have increasingly become popular as they work as both a laptop and as a notepad. As such, this makes this type of laptop ideal for a wide range of activities.

Desktop replacement, rugged, and business laptops are similar in size and specifications. These laptops are usually larger, with wide screens, and possess more processing speed. Gaming laptops typically have a greater level of specifications to satisfy the processing requirements of gaming.
