How to Replace Keyboard on a Laptop

Replacing a laptop keyboard will eventually occur as long as a computer is used over time. The good thing is that you can replace most laptop keyboards with less than $100. The entire process of removing the old keyboard and replacing it with a new one is not difficult as long as you have the right tools to work with. Generally speaking, most of what you would need to get the job done is a set of small screwdrivers. Before the actual process of removal, you will need to find the correct keyboard for the right laptop.

1. Looking for the Right Replacement Part

The first step in replacing a keyboard is getting the correct replacement keyboard. You can go to your local spare part dealer or check online. You will want to compare prices and get the best deal for the right part. Once you get the right part, you are good to go.

2. The Replacement Process

Be sure to check the manufactures website for any peculiarities associated with your laptop. Armed with a set of screwdrivers and the new keyboard, you are ready to begin the keyboard replacement process. Also, you may require a flat plastic, which you can use to pry open the cover. Before you begin, ensure that the device is completely off and the charger is disconnected from the laptop. Also, you have to remove the battery if it is a removable type. If it is sealed within the laptop, you may have to open the device and disconnect the battery jumper cable. Next, you will want to examine the laptop to see where you can begin the process. You will usually see a cover, which is usually between the display and the keyboard. If there is any screw, go ahead and unscrew it. Check everywhere to ensure that you didn’t miss any screws. If you miss a screw and attempt to pry open the cover, you may end up destroying the cover. Check to see if there is any cable that you need to disconnect before opening the cover. You can then go ahead and detach the cover. You can use a flat tool for support. Do not use excessive force. As the cover is being removed, ensure that there are no additional screws or cables. Once the cover is removed, check to see if there are more cables to be disconnected. Then proceed to unscrew all screws that are keeping the keyboard fixed. Once the screws are off, ensure there is no hidden screw that has not been unscrewed. Also, check for more data cables. Now, slowly remove the old keyboard and fix the new one in place. Repeat the earlier processes in reverse. Make sure you plug back all data cables and screw on all screws back. Note: you may want to label each item as you remove it. Doing this can help you put everything back together correctly.
